The 2025 edition of The Best Lawyers in America® has recognized three Murtha Cullina attorneys as "Lawyer of the Year." This accolade is awarded to individual attorneys who received the highest overall peer feedback for a specific practice area and geographic region.

Partner Heather O. Berchem was named "Lawyer of the Year" for Health Care in New Haven, Connecticut. As chair of the firm's Regulatory practice and a member of the Health Care and Long-Term Care practices, Heather advises nursing homes, assisted living communities, CCRCs, hospitals, and home health care and hospice agencies on a wide range of regulatory, compliance, risk management and reimbursement issues. 

Of counsel Alfred E. Smith Jr. was selected as "Lawyer of the Year" for Environmental Law in New Haven, Connecticut. Alfred is a member of the firm's Environmental and Municipal Law practices and formerly served as managing partner and chair of the Regulatory practice. In his current practice, he regularly advises clients with respect to regulatory compliance issues and in connection with environmental issues associated with real estate and corporate transactions.

Of counsel Willard F. Pinney Jr. was named "Lawyer of the Year" for Mergers & Acquisitions in Hartford, Connecticut. A member of Murtha's Corporate Law practice, Willard has more than 40 years of experience representing both public and private companies in the areas of corporate and securities law. He has extensive experience with mergers and acquisitions, contracts, private equity transactions and general company representation.

Murtha Cullina recently announced it will combine with New York-based Harris Beach and will operate as one firm, known as Harris Beach Murtha, beginning January 1, 2025. Harris Beach PLLC announced that 6 lawyers from offices in New York have been included in the 2025 edition of The Best Lawyers in America® as “Lawyer of the Year.”
