Our multifaceted practice is particularly well suited to foster the professional growth of new associates. The breadth of our client base provides associates with opportunities to work closely with more experienced lawyers on complex matters and to enjoy primary responsibility for smaller or more routine matters. In this environment, associates learn the skills of sophisticated legal practice and also develop the initiative and critical judgment necessary for effective client counseling. Although major matters are always handled by appropriately staffed client service teams, the more typical cases are conducted by one partner and one associate. A spirit of cooperation makes the expertise of more senior lawyers available to all. This accessibility, together with our substantial library and computer-research facilities, gives new associates both the human and the material resources they need. Murtha Cullina encourages associates to assume responsibility as soon as they are ready. We emphasize early contact with clients, and the matters we handle for individuals and small businesses often provide new attorneys with the opportunity to engage in important personal counseling.

Our practice is both dynamic and diverse. We serve a broad range of clients, including major corporations, regulated entities, entrepreneurial businesses and individuals. We are organized for management purposes into eight major departments - Corporate, Litigation, Trust and Estates, Health Care, Environmental, Utilities and Communications, Commercial and Real Estate, and Government Affairs - but the client-service functions are applied and developed by interdepartmental practice groups which focus our resources and maximize our effectiveness. Some of our practice groups are described in the following pages. Each group includes lawyers of varying seniority, with one or more partners coordinating the practice within the group. As we identify new or expanding opportunities to serve clients, the practice group structure evolves to meet the needs of practice development and training. The constant integration of specialties permits lawyers from various practice areas to work together, and contributes to the successful linkage between our Hartford and New Haven offices. Our flexibility not only enhances the expertise of our client service, but also reinforces the collegiality of our practice.
